Chosen Hamlet
An adaptation of “Hamlet”, Michele collaborates with Chosen Power, the first Asian self-advocacy organization from people with intellectual differences in Hong Kong to create a piece that explores identities and labeling effects. The team was diverse including people with intellectual differences, person who is visually impaired, people from different backgrounds, parents and theatre practitioner. We adopted an open rehearsal approach and allowed people to join and picked their own roles. It was Michele’s first attempt in a universal approach of rehearsing and staging a play.
Other than the performance, the tour to Shanghai was also a community cultural exchange trip. Together with the cast and the back stage, the whole team lived as a close community supporting each other during the process.
A cultural exchange day trip was also arranged where we learnt about architectures and local culture.
Actors also ran a workshop for local university students to raise (dis)abilities awareness and share basic improvisational skills. Many of the participants also came to watch the performance and was very touched by it.
